The National - Trouble Will Find Me vs. Chemical Brothers - Further

VS.
Dudes, this is the last of the new ones.  After this, it's pitting winners against winners and that will go fast.  S here's the deal-eo: I'm going to give everyone Christmas break to pull a Karl to catch up and vote on anything you want to.  Then, in the new year, we come back strong.  Who's with me?

  2. I vote The National. I will try to justify that vote this time, since I am pretty hyped about The National in general, but for now, a single vote is better than no votes. Anyone?

  3. Also The National. When I put on this Chemical Brothers album I thought I'd probably end up voting for it. Definitely my favorite I've heard from them in a while, though I don't really follow them much, so I could have missed another gem. But, while I celebrate The National's entire catalog, this one is really solid. I like it a lot and a little more than this Chemical Brothers album.

  4. It's funny, the way I feel about the National seems exactly the same as Sarah said she feels about the Walkmen. (keyword: aloof). I kinda liked 'em when I first heard them in 05 or 06, but they've just never done it for me since then. Shoot (shit, actually). I'll vote the them anyway.

Chemical Bros. seem to excel in a genre that I don't really ever want to listen to. Maybe if I had more time...

  5. I'm going with the Chemical Bros. They are much maligned for being too popular and mainstream and reliant on big beats by the electronic elite, but I have found their music to typically be quite exhilarating and butt-shake-worthy regardless. And, hell, they introduced me to the voice of Beth Orton back in the day. That alone is worth a vote, no? This is a better album than their last couple, too, IMHO.

The National are probably good guys who make good music. I guess I feel like I should like them more than I do, but they've just never quite done it for me. Not on this one either. There's just no accounting for taste.

  6. Chemical Brothers. Remember that episode of the Cosby Show when one of Cliff’s old friends shows up with a new young white ditzy girlfriend? The couple was talking about the Miles Davis show that they just went to and the girlfriend said it was alright but “I just kept waiting for him to sing” (and Cliff genially and subtly mocks her about it). I kinda felt like that with this Chemical Brothers record. I know there is singing sometimes and I like those songs more and makes me wonder if they just forgot to add the vocals on the other tracks, or maybe Beth Orton wasn’t returning their calls. I mean, I like a lot of music without singing, I’m not some kind of philistine.

Ever thought that The National sounds like the Tindersticks? I just typed in “the National Tindersticks” into the interweb (which autocorrected to “the National sounds like the Tindersticks”) and found many nerds out there who agree so I’m not crazy. I love (mostly older) Tindersticks records but I’m not sure if I could tell you why if one pressed me on it. It’s kind of dour and mumbly but I like it. The same could be said about the National, but with slightly better enunciation, and I like them quite a bit. I hadn’t gotten around to checking out this latest album as I assumed it would be so similar to the last couple albums that I would hardly notice. Indeed it sounds pretty similar to those albums but it was good and interesting enough for me to enjoy. Plus one of these dudes played a big part of Sharon Van Etten’s last album which rules.

    Joelg out! Am I late?

  7. Oh, I vote for the National if that wasn't clear.

  8. I've listened to both of these a number of times over the last couple weeks, and am having a hard time choosing. I haven't listened to Chemical Brothers in a long time, but might have to buy just this one more album. The National gets my vote, though, because it's new to me. It might not prove as lastingly good as Chemical Brothers, but I'm biased towards new things. Like, you shouldn't have to wait a few hundred years to say you prefer JD Salinger to Shakespeare. (Okay this is on a lesser and more personal scale. But still.)
