  2. Man, I hope I'mm not the only one who votes on this, but then again, that would mean a win for me. I'm going with my pick, Dr. John. I listened to The Luyas, and you know, it was pretty okay. But Dr. John man. Not just Dr. John, but Dr. John with the Meters. People should vote for this album just for that, just for the connection to this amazing band I used to see live. They were called Baxter, and I think they did a Meters cover, and they (Baxter) were about as funky as this here Dr. John album. Which, c'mon, is pretty damn funky. Right? Who wants to dance?

  3. I thought I would have voted for Dr John, but for some reason it just didn't do it for me. And I've thought the same thing in the past, so there is something I'm missing. It could be that I'm listening at work, and therefore I'm not giving the proper due it deserves. The Luyas were ok, nothing special, but it did seem to meet my 'not too loud so people complain' requirements at work, and therefore they get my vote.

  6. Having seen the band Andrew referred to multiple times up close, I have to say that they were good and fun, but only a maple-syrup drinking, mouse-putting-in-beer-bottle-to-get-free-beer Canadian could call them as funky as this album. Also, I vote Dr. John. The Luyas were enjoyable, but this album is good all the way through.

  7. In the first half of the Dr. John album I thought “this isn’t bad, but it’s not really flipping my pancakes,” but towards the end of it I was twitching and thinking “isn’t this over yet?? I no longer desire to hear this any longer!!” Now Dr. John seems like a swell guy. Does my strong aversion to his music make me a bad person? Yes, perhaps it does.

Additionally I think that I associate Dr. John with being a guest on Sesame Street and the Muppet Show. While I have nothing against these fine programs which some political elements view as vehicles to brainwash the youth with socialist ideology, I do think it created my perception of Dr. John as a goofy novelty figure……But, perhaps I made that up and he never even appeared on those programs, and surely I could find the answers pretty quickly, but I would rather not enter that internet rabbit hole at the moment.

I do not question the funkiness of Mr. John and the Meters, and if DM was based on rating which album is the funkiest, then yes the Dr. John album would beat out the pale Northerners. However, this is not the case.

I listened to the Luyas last week and I sorta forgot what they sounded like. But I think that I quite liked them. I think that they are quite nice, I vote for them.

    1. Joe, you're thinking of Dr. Teeth from the Muppet Show. I know, it's an easy one to get confused. Also, have you ever read Neil Postman's damning critique of Sesame Street? Pretty sure you'd like it.

    2. My association for Dr John is Treme, which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy about him even though I didn't listen to this album.

  8. Dr. John was pretty chill. "I've been Hoodood" reminded me a little bit of Tom Waits. Both Dr. John and The Luyas I had not heard of before now so I was glad to be introduced. The Luyas I will look forward to listening to more in the future. Repetitive, Droning, Feminine, and Spacey.

    The Luyas has my vote.

  9. Dr. John is exactly the kind of thing I've been looking for; I look forward to many more listens.

But The Luyas is one of my picks, and I won't hesitate to vote for them. I don't really know much about them, but I heard them on Jian Ghomeshi and almost pulled the car over to listen. I really like that radio moment, which is particularly rare for me since I don't listen to much music on the radio these days. So when it happens, I like to reward it.

(A couple times it's happened to me in the past: Laurie Anderson, and Black Box Recorder. The former has held strong for me; not at all the latter. It's hit and miss.)
