Alice Clark - Alice Clark vs. Joey Bada$$ - 1999

VS.

Looks like another interesting match-up.  Hey, remember the good old days when Karl was actively abstaining and everyone else wasn't?

  1. Joey _is_ a BadA$$. So is Alice, but Joey won this round for me.

  2. Really cool discovering Alice Clark through joelg recently but I like Joey Bada$$ a lot plus it gets me when artists are young and he is young and also our neighbor.

  4. Hmmm, not a lot of action here. Sometimes I blame myself. More often I blame the rest of you. Is this the D of MDM? Nah, we'll keep this rolling. Anyway, match-ups like this make it completely worth my while. In fact, for me the entire MDM has been worth being introduced to Alice Clark. You all have introduced me to some great stuff, but I think this is my favorite find. It's right up my alley. It's like Joe said to himself while making his list, what could I pick that would guarantee a vote from zwartitude? Ahhh yeah, Alice Clark.
Now, I'm also enjoying Joey Bada$$ too. I don't listen to a lot of new hip-hop these days. I wish I knew more, but usually when I try and find stuff, it ends up being materialistic / nihilistic / or misogynistic / or full of a certain n word / which I've had lots of students explain a bit / to me why I should just accept that shit / but I still always feel uncomfortable listening to it.

This seems guilty of a lot of these charges, but the beats and rhymes are pretty infectious. Still, though, I'm going to go with Alice. In fact, I wouldn't be sorry if she won the whole thang.

  6. Yeah, though I can't catch it with my mitt / Not. Romney-Joey Bada$$ raps the best that I have recently heard / while he is certainly no turd / my omni..present existence as a background music nerd / predicts my vote, indeed that Alice Walker is more. the. shit.

  7. I think this Joey BadA$$ record is pretty great. When he first got some attention he was lauded as a throwback to the “Native Tongues” era hip hop of the 90’s, although I’m not sure how accurate that is. Similar to Andrew, I’m often disappointed by a lot of current hip hop. Actually pretty freaking depressed at some stuff actually (sorry to sound all Tipper Gore but…) all this stupid Asap Mob Tyler Purple Cough Syrup drinking junk is kinda dumb. Anyway, so when someone slightly different, like Joey Bada$$ comes along, it’s exciting. Still I wish he aligned more closely to my bougie values like not saying “bitches” so much and having more real politics and less weird conspiracy politics but I think there are a lot of great rhymes on it. There are a lot of other strong turns from the other folks from the large “Progressive Era” crew, the best being Capital Steez on “Survival Tactics.”

This record is what the kids call a “mixtape” with most of the beats lifted from other songs. So although many of the instrumental tracks are pretty great it’s kind of like hip hop karaoke, but I can still complement them on their good taste.

Favorite line that I have no idea what it means: “I guess Columbine was listening to Chaka Khan and Pokémon wasn’t getting recognized at Comic-Con.”

Andrew, are you still teaching at Kuyper? And if so who are these students that are trying convince you to not care about the “n-word?” Times must be changing. If it makes you feel any better Grandpa Chuck D. agrees with you Andrew. I saw him a few months back lecturing a meager audience about such things.

Alice Clark. I know what you’re thinking….this must be a greatest hits collection and that’s not allowed in Death Match. Well you are wrong; this was Alice’s solid gold debut album that just sounds like a greatest hits album, which was released in 1972, and then she disappeared apparently. Although it is reminiscent of other artists I feel this has a unique feel. And is good. And is nice.

    I vote Alice Clark.

  8. I don't listen to much hip-hop or soul, so for me it's pretty much just a genre vote: Do I like soul better, or hip-hop? Perhaps I should abstain, since I don't know enough to really discriminate here.

But no. The answer is soul. I like soul better.

Both albums good, etc, etc, though.
