VS.

  1. Well, I think Sloan won that last one. So, here's the next. You have as long as it takes until enough people vote for the album I decide I like the most. By the way, what happened to Brooke? Please tell me she's not involved in some kind of Fight Club downward spiral.

  2. I vote Grimes. It's the only thing I can listen to right now.

  3. The above is true. But I put a stop to that this afternoon to check out this matchup. I vote for City Center Redeemer because I like the album better than Constantines by Constantines. Redeemer has good up and down energies. I like Constantines drive through electric voice that sounds like The Hold Steady but Redeemer is a more full flavored ride in my opinion. I was thinking that they used a synthesizer but joelg said it is "processed guitar maybe delay" and that aspect wins me.

Zwartitude, yes, I have been involved in some kind of Fight Club downward spiral. My shiners are bulging and both legs are broken. Thanks for keeping this Death alive.

  4. I vote Constantines. Now, someone else should vote.

  5. I also vote Constantines, now I didn't actually hear Redeemer, but I did listen to the self titled City Center album, so maybe Redeemer is the greatest thing in the world, and future generations will point out how dumb I am... That's ok, I can take it.

  7. I'm sitting this round out due to a lack of time, effort, and general motivation. But I HAVE been listening to a lot of Hot Chip in the car...Can I put a vote in for them?

    1. No warmed over disco allowed....unless its a cassingle of "Boys From School," that'd be cool.

    2. Oh, Joe. You're right. Cassingles are cool. I used to have the Lemonhaeds' cover of "Mrs. Robinson" on cassingle. For reals.

  8. I vote for The Constantines. Both are good enough. Constantines is more my bag right now.

  9. This Constantines album is pretty good eh? I have listened to a lot of “Shine a Light” and “Tournament of Hearts” but I had never heard this one before. It may better than those others. Their basic sound is one of my musical comfort foods, drawing heavily on angular arty punk that blossomed in the mid-90’s. Who knew that Fugazi and Drive Like Jehu records made it all the way to Guelph, Ontario?

On the other hand, I think this City Center record is really great. Just a duo, I think they create really interesting sound with a simple drum set up, one guitar and a slew of effects to make the songs swirl all around. I think it’s a cool mix of trippy sound experimentation but grounded in a bunch of really solid songs. Highlight for me is the last track, “Teardrop Children,” which I think is really beautiful with lyrics like a good short story that’s just abstract enough to be effective. Plus it quotes His Name Is Alive: “Breath the air and walk around,” pretty much the best lyric ever.

    I vote City Center.

  12. At first listen, there's nothing so different about this earlier Constantines album than the later ones I know. But, ya know. I *like* those things that are the same.

Enjoyed City Center too. But I think it needed to grab my attention more in order to really register.
