Cat Power - Sun vs. Spiritualized - Sweet Heart, Sweet Light

VS.

Jeff's going to either really hate or really love the outcome on this one, that is if he ever actually checks this MDM.  Good job actually voting on that last one, peeps.  Hey, where's Sarah?

  1. Both interesting artists who I continue to follow. Unfortunately, Cat Power seems to become less interesting as time goes on and her music doesn't grab me like it used to. I also found Spiritualized losing steam over time, repeating what they had done before. However, I really like Sweet Heart a lot, and find it much better than the last several albums he's put out. It doesn't break any new grounds for him, but he really pulls it all together this time out.

  2. Notes on Spiritualized:
A good listen for perhaps a Road Trip Music in rural Tennesse
Freedom and So Long You Pretty One both lyrically enjoyable to me
General ambivalence toward the music content

You Are Free gave me a new lease on life back in the day and I will forever be grateful to Cat Power for that. Besides that fact, I really enjoy Sun for its beauty sound and lyric. It has synth which is new found music gravitation for me. For a long while, I thought she brought back Johnny Cash to life on the 2nd to last song and I liked thinking of it as his voice from the heavenlygrave and listening to it that way. That song man, NOTHING BUT TIME, moves me the way You Are Free and COLORS AND KIDS does. Oh but anyway, it’s Iggy Pop!

  3. I prefer a less than favorite Cat Power album to a less than fave Spiritualized album. If I get a chance, I'll try to say why, but no matter what my defense, some will just chalk it up to being a girl I am sure. I like her brand o soul better. And I think this album finds itself in a different sort of mood and mode than others of hers before it.

  4. Spiritualized. But, as far as Cat Power goes, it's their least worst album.

  5. Gotta go Spiritualized, for Jeff of course. But I think both are excellent

  6. This is super close. I wouldn't say I'm a major fan of either Cat Power or Spiritualized, but I do like them and have several records of each of them. I think I'll go with Sun. It shows more growth and change than the Spiritualized record.

  7. I have a record of voting Cat Power in these MDM's. Seriously, you can look it up. This time, though, I'm going with Spiritualized. Sure, it's has some shit tracks, isn't much different from his other albums, and actually isn't as good overall as Sun. This is all true. So, you may ask, why the crap am I choosing it? Basically for tracks 2 and 10, more specifically the last two minutes or so of those tracks. This probably seems ridiculous, but when I ask myself, what would I rather existed: those four minutes, or the entire Cat Power album, I find myself answering the former. Yep, I'd trade an entire Cat Power record, as strong as it is, for those few moments of rock n' roll perfection. Also, I have really great memories of seeing Spiritualized play this album live with Jeff. (Seeing them with Jeff; not seeing Jeff play with them although I'm sure he'd be awesome).

  8. This I know to be true about the Death Match. There will always be some kind of Zwart making me listen to some kind of Spiritualized…….well this is only my second Death Match so maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement. Another few years pass and I check out Spiritualized again, and its ok, but again I fail to fall under their spell and be baptized into their ranks of fervent devotees. I know, I know, Zaphitude always tells me that they need to be seen live to be truly appreciated. He’s always sayin “you’ve GOT to check em out live man. You totally need to do a bunch of E first and it’ll sound so AMAAAZING! Then about 90 minutes into the show, pop a couple of ‘schrooms and THEN try to tell me that they’re not the greatest friggin’ band on earth!!” Maybe. Maybe.

I enjoy this Cat Power a fair amount. I’ve only heard it a few times and I’m still makin up my mind about it. Like a lot you sensitive boys and girls, I have been very fond of some Cat Power in my life. I never liked “The Greatest” much and didn’t expect to like this much either, but some of it I really like. But then there is all that half-rapping that makes me kind of uncomfortable. Kind of uncomfortable like Kanye’s new t-shirts: http://allhiphop.com/2013/10/21/kanye-west-sells-confederate-flag-themed-merch-on-yeezus-tour/.

    Cat Power vote I.

  9. I realize I'm too late, but since there's no winner declaration here I'm going to say I vote for Cat power.

  10. Never liked "The Greatest" much? What's wrong with you?

I've been only managing to listen to one album per round for a while, but I managed to listen to both of these. Couldn't make up my mind in time, though.
