Bon Iver gets my vote. I was familiar with this one, and have enjoyed it... I wonder, if Wake Up Child was available on spotify, how long I could play it on repeat... b/c Bon Iver started to bother me after a couple of plays... maybe The Soil would have pulled out ahead.
Too kind. But also: I do remember those days fondly. I expect that MDM will drag out into 2014, when I will be able to prove my mettle or play with words once again. Until mid-December, I'm toast.
Second Bon Iver record vs. the first Soil & the Sun. This is difficult, but not as difficult as if it had been the first Bon Iver album vs. the second Soil & the Sun one. In the that case, Soil would gets vote, but in this case Bon Iver does (is that confusing enough?). Also, I am really digging that Justin guy's other band, Volcano Choir, right now. The new record is pretty great, so if you like Bon Iver and you haven't checked it out, you should. That is all.
I haven't voted yet for a few recent matches, so I'm a little reluctant to jump right back in.
Stevie D. introduced me to Soil and the Sun when he had them play for the first Inchfest. [Calling Stevie D...we need a vote here!] This was one of the best live shows I had ever seen, and they had played on the back of a trailer.
Perhaps if I had been introduced to Bon Iver at a live show I might harbor similar feelings for them. But I don't, and it doesn't look like they're going to need my vote anyway.
I'm having a hard time keeping up with MDM, both time-wise and motivation-wise, but I appreciate what you folks have to say. I've been listening to Jagwar Ma's debut album recently, and Tame Impala's "Lonerism" and Primal Scream's "More Light" in the car this week. So, I guess my vote this round goes to one of those albums.
At first I thought it was alright, but now the Bon Iver guy's falsetto just wears on me. Maybe I'll check out Volcano Choir, since I do think that he has good musical instincts/talent whatever.
Soil and Sun it is. Didn't really like 'em alot. Just can't hang with the sanging on Bon Iver.
I thought I had already voted here, but apparently not. Bon Iver for me. Maybe it's kind of lame, but I really love the 80's musical references in Beth/Rest: Bruce Hornsby electric piano, Joe Satriani lead guitar, Whoever sax, etc.
I'll go with Bon Iver on this one.....somewhat hesitantly. Aforementioned Bruce Horsbism gives me some pause, but much of it I like. TS&thS are quite nice as well. I saw them live a little bit ago, and think that I like the live show a bit more than the recording.
For Emma, Forever Ago left me wanting more, but now that I listen to the double-self-titled Bon Iver . . . it's not what I was wanting. The covers in particular rubbed me the wrong way. A guess: The instrumentation (particularly of the voice) made a very homogenous and appealing style on the first album. But now that he's doing MORE DIFFERENT things on the second album, all of a sudden I'm wondering why he's singing like that. (Is this similar to Andy W.'s comment? But I definitely didn't get tired of the multi-tracked falsetto on the first album.)
So The Soil & The Sun gets my vote because it's new to me and I like it. Not a vote AGAINST Bon Iver, per se. More like a default.
Uh, I'm now seeing that Grooveshark shows a different track listing than Wikipedia. Grooveshark may have let me down on those covers; they really did stick out badly on the album -- they would make a lot more sense as B-sides.
I will have listened to both of these albums, and posted a comment here, by tomorrow night, so help me God.
ReplyDeletestill waiting..........did God not help you out?

ReplyDeleteIn case you didn't get the chance, you can listen to Soil and the Sun here:

Thanks, I did find that. Hmm, maybe I'll play it again this morning...

ReplyDeleteHey Sarah, remember when you wrote full reviews for MDM that were so poetic they could have been published just for their prose? Just sayin...

So that's one vote for The Soil and the Sun.

ReplyDeleteHate to say it, but none of those albums are in the MDM. Sounds more like you're abstaining. :)
