Q: What do you get when you mix The Beatles, Electric Light Orchestra, Squeeze, Suzanne Vega, Ben Folds Five and Tom Petty? A: Something more interesting than Farrah, which doesn't mix anything together, but copies it's influences one song at a time.
While Jeff's vastly talented ability to list bands is impressive, I shit you not that I thought the same thing listening to Jarvis, albeit without the ability to list bands to sound cool, ultra hip and informed.
Nice one Jeff, mentioning that a band sounds like The Beatles, but are just copying them. Never heard that one before, smart!
The ratings: I do have to agree though, Farrah isn't breaking any new ground: -1 But they did cover Europe's "The Final Countdown": +1
Jarvis sounds like a guy who thinks he's really fucking special: -1 Jarvis Kanye'd Michael Jackson: +1 Jeff: -1
Ahh... Farrah wins with a total of Zero due to Jeff dragging down Jarvis into negative territory. Way to go Jeff, you're Yoko Ono.
I've listened carefully to both albums, and I've weighed and considered all the thoughtful comments above. I plan to do some more listening tonight, but I don't think even 100 listens would change my decision: I abstain.
I like both (I'm determined to like every album I listen to). Farrah, though, sounds too much like Hot Chip. But Jarvis Cocker doesn't sound like Hot Chip enough.
I suspect you are just attempting to get a rise out of me with your Hot Chip comments, zwartitude, but I am going to abstain. I figure it's better to abstain now than to accidentally get you knocked up before we're even married and make Jesus cry on top of it. (I'm abstaining from comment. My vote still counts, yo.)
New rule: vote for an album if you chose it. I'm changing my vote to Jarvis Cocker even though that's not allowed because now he wins in a friggin landslide.
Votes due Friday by midnight suckers.
ReplyDeleteWhere can I listen to these? My only source is Grooveshark, but no good for either of them.
ReplyDeletethis should work for Mr. Cocker:

I don't know about that other one. I searched YouTube for "Farrah Farrah" and there were boobies everywhere. Cuidado eh!
Farrah is here:

Also, I vote Jarvis Cocker. More complicated and interesting for me than Farrah.
Both are on Spotify as well

Also, Bruce swayed me.
Jarvis gets my vote.
Bluntly put, in the fewest of words: Jarvis.
ReplyDeleteFarrah is just a bit too derivative and tame for my taste. Kinda agree with Jeff about the influences thing. Gasp.

The compelling arguments for Farrah almost swayed me, but I was slightly more OK with Jarvis.
ReplyDeleteI vote for Mr. Cocker because I like his music better.
